Alarming statistics about child abuse, at home in our community. Between July 2001 and December 2007, eight children in Dona Ana County died as a result of abuse. In 2002, all New Mexico's three child abuse deaths occurred In Dona Ana County. Starting October 1 through December 31, 2008 there were 432 protective service reports accepted in this 92 day period. 72 were substantiated, resulting in 132 child victims. This does not include the reports that were screened out, or unreported cases, the actual number of child abuse victims in Dona Ana County is higher.


In August 2009, a mother arrested by local law enforcement on unrelated charges, entrusted her baby in a neighbors' care during her incarceration, she had no one else to ask, only to have the baby murdered by her designated care giver. This is a one of the target populations of the Child Crisis Center.
